Trespassing

There’s an abandoned barbed wire lined field

backing up to our yard that holds a solitary

reddish barn. The crumbling construction is old

not old like your grandparents

more like, old like the earth might be flat.

So old it makes me feel young and innocent, makes me want

to sit cross legged in its shadows and listen to its stories

filter through the cobwebs and termite dust.

It’s not safe, my wife chides, but I’m always drawn

back to that sensation. I like feeling young, not like I’m

creeping into middle age, I like being ignored

not ignored like I don’t matter, but ignored the way adults might

a small child during reminiscent conversations.

Here I’m only noticed when coming or going

it’s movement that causes the attention, the momentary

adjustment of a shadow or the leaving of footprints on ancient

sawdust, then I can feel its eyes on me, watching.

I’m always careful not to stay too long, don’t want to outlast

my welcome, don’t want someone to come looking

for me. I’m only allowed here because I’m not

causing a disturbance. I always leave the teetering structure

feeling stronger, renewed, that I might be able

to make it out in the world where I’m neither young

nor innocent, where the dull roar of life only intensifies.
